When the global automotive industry is concerned, China is GM’s most critical market, growing at a phenomenal 25% per annum. Close to 2.2- 2.5 million cars are sold in China every year, and by all industry standards, a controlling stake in this expanding market place is crucial in the new auto-wars. Ironically, despite a humiliating whipping by Toyota (in April), GM seems undeterred in China, which has also got a lot to do with its first-mover advantage in Dragon land. With a 12% market share, the Detroit major holds the top spot in China. GM sales hover close to 700,000 units, which are enough to propel it ahead of archrivals Volkswagen, Honda, Hyundai and fast catching up Toyota. Indeed, GM’s stellar performance in China is largely responsible for its strong position in Asia.
