In their day and age, some of the world’s most intellectual, progressive & forward looking thought leaders tried to predict how technology would (or wouldn’t) evolve for generations that followed. And what is truly astonishing is that even their predictions have proved, by and large, as distant from reality as you can imagine. One such failed prophesier was Lord Kelvin president, Royal Society, who said in 1895, “Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.” A memo by Western Union in the same era was even more hilarious, which proclaimed that, “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication!” And then there was H. M. Warner, founder, Warner Brothers, who remarked in 1927 (the silent movie era), “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” One can’t forget the ‘not-so-tight-lipped’ erstwhile IBM Chairman Thomas Watson either, who blatantly displayed his ingenuity in 1943, when he proclaimed, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” Even former Microsoft Chairman, and the world’s richest man, Bill Gates can claim membership of this famously infamous club of soothsayers, thanks to his far-fetched vision for the future of data storage needs in 1981, “640 KB ought to be enough for anybody!” Well, what were you thinking, Mr. Gates?
