SOME DO, SOME DON’T...

Succession issues have been the prime accused for many family . ascos across India Inc. The post-split aftermath has been even more intriguing; as it has seen some business entity going great guns, while others quickly running out of steam. It’s almost like a trend that’s prevalent across the board. The Singhanias, the Goenkas, the Kirloskars, the Birlas; all saw their business splitting apart and consequently one company transcending the others. After the division of Birla group, for instance, it was the Aditya Vikram Birla group currently steered by Kumaramangalam Birla, which emerged as the leader with companies like Grasim Industries and Hindalco.

Other group houses like G. P. Birla of Hindustan Motors, K. K. Birla of sugar & chemical businesses and M. P. Birla of Birla Corp. eventually succumbed to the heat and dust of liberalisation. There are some corporate houses which, even after splitting, went in doldrums in unison like Escorts, Shrirams and Modis. The Ambani brothers remain a heartening exception for now, with both Anil and Mukesh doing exceptionally well in their respective businesses.
