NOKIA STILL LEADS THE PACK
“We shall be very difficult to beat in this (India) market,” claimed Olli- Pekka Kallasvuo, President & CEO of Nokia Worldwide recently. One would be tempted to ask Kallasvuo to take a reality check, as Nokia’s share in India slipped below 70% in December 2006, after reaching a consummate 78.8% in February 2006. Au contraire, Motorola’s market share has surged past the 10% mark (ORG Gfk figures). The once invincible Nokia can no longer be complacent in the ever changing Indian mobile handset market. With the world’s top five mobile vendors Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung & LG putting up a flamboyant performance on display, the Indian mobile handset industry is witnessing its golden days. In the last five years, the dynamics of this industry have undergone a complete overhaul. And rightly so!
