Born to hippy parents on October 20, 1971 in Minnesota, Winona grew up in a literati commune and after watching movies in the commune barn, she developed an interest in acting. Her unique upbringing and extensive reading meant that she veered towards alternative and cerebral scripts, starring in cult films like the gothic Beetle juice and Heathers and numerous literary adaptations such as The Crucible and Little Women.
