India's Import and Export From Switzerland

On the back of continuous attempts from both sides (for example, through the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement in 1994, or through the formation of an India specific Venture Capital Fund – SwissTec VCF – by the Swiss Ministry of Economy, or through the regular visits of high-level delegates from both sides), total bilateral trade has registered a mind boggling 134% growth from $2.71 billion in FY (financial year) 2002-03 to $6.34 billion in FY 2004- 05. Despite growing, exports from India to Switzerland remain one-tenth of what India imports from Switzerland. During 2004-05, India imported goods worth $5.82 billion from Switzerland, 90% of which was in pearls, precious stones and jewellery items. The lion’s share (32%) in the $524.47 million worth of Indian exports also constituted the same items. Articles of apparel and organic chemicals also form a major part in Indian exports.
Nuclear reactors, boilers, optical, photographic & surgical instruments are the other major items that India imports from Switzerland. For the first half of FY 2005-06, Indian exports stood at $222.08 million as compared to imports of $3.77 billion. With the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement signed in 1997 and with the establishment of a Swiss Business Hub in Mumbai in 2001, Switzerland has become a major investor in India. In FY 2005-06, it was the seventh largest investor in India with investment of $96 million. On the other hand, since April 1996, India has approved investments into Switzerland of $49.58 million, of which $38.34 million was during the first nine months of FY 2005-06. Infosys , Wipro and TCS, all have major operations in Switzerland. Undoubtedly, a country with such a strategic location as Switzerland, surely deserves attention from many more quarters, than Bollywood, honeymooners & black money hoarders! For a change, the truth is, if there’s heaven on earth (for businesses), it seems to be here...
