World’s second and third largest supermarket stores, Paris based Tesco and UK based Carrefour, have agreed to an asset-swap deal of their respective superstore chains in Taiwan and Central Europe. Under the deal, Carrefour will transfer fifteen of its stores in Slovakia and Czech Republic to Tesco for $227 million. In return, Carrefour will receive Tesco’s six Hsin Tien hypermarkets in Taiwan, valued at $159 million. The move is being prompted by low market shares of both retailers and would help strengthen their businesses complementarily.
